1. OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this activity are:

  • To improve students’ speaking and public speaking skills
  • To establish networking between participants both domestically and abroad
  • To motivate participants in developing critical thinking

2. COMPETITIONS AND DESCRIPTIONS

3 types of competitions:

  • Speech Contest (participants deliver speeches in English that are watched by the audience and judges)
  • Essay Writing Competition (participants write essays on a predetermined topic with a predetermined duration)
  • Story Telling Contest (participants tell one of the stories that have been determined using costumes and properties needed in the delivery of the story)

3. RULES OF THE COMPETITIONS

SPEECH CONTEST

Before the competition

  • Participants are active university students;
  • Each university can only send a maximum of 3 participants;
  • Participants must complete administration (registration & payment) no later than one week before the technical meeting (29 November, 2019).
  • Global Topic is. Sub-topics that are the theme of the speech can be downloaded on the website Widyatama International Academic Competition (WI-CAN): Discussion of topics carried out in English, and does not contain Ethnicity, Religion, Race, and Inter-group relation and / or pornographic elements;
  • Participants are given 7 minutes to give a speech in accordance with the sub-topics chosen. Excess time results in an automatic value reduction by a panel of judges.
  • Participants are allowed to use assistive devices to make speeches, except hazardous materials (explosive materials including fireworks, sharp weapons, etc.).
  • Participants must take lottery numbers and lottery sub-topics at the technical meeting and submit them to the Speech Contest coordinator.
  • The committee does not provide any equipment except loudspeakers. Sound effects, visual effects and others are the responsibility of the participants

During the competition

 

  • Participants are required to wear neat and polite clothes.
  • Participants must attend at least 30 minutes before re-registration is closed. If not, the participant is declared void.
  • Participants are not allowed to do any exercises while in the competition room or outside the competition room during the competition.
  • LO will guide participants to the stage when the participant’s name is called by the MC.
  • Participants are stated to have started the speech at the time the timer starts.
  • Participants are not allowed to ask for a repetition of the timer from the start unless there are technical problems or other force majeure events.
  • The jury has the right to give an assessment in accordance with the evaluation criteria set by the committee.
  • The final result of the jurys assessment is affirmed.

STORY TELLING CONTEST

Before the competition

  • Participants are active students of universities.
  • Each university can only send a maximum of 3 participants.
  • Participants must complete administration (registration & payment) no later than one week before the technical meeting (29 November, 2019).
  • The story to be told was chosen by the participants and reported to the committee during the registration. The title of the story can be seen on the Widyatama International Academic Competition (WI-CAN) website.
  • The story should be in English and it does not contain Ethnicity, Religion, Race, and Inter-group relation and/or pornographic elements.
  • Participants are given 7 minutes to tell the selected story. Excess time on stage results in an automatic deduction by the judging panel.
  • Participants must take lottery numbers at the technical meeting for the order of appearances and submit them to the Story Telling Contest coordinator.
  • Participants are not permitted to bring dangerous stage equipment (explosive materials including fireworks, sharp weapons, etc.).
  • The committee does not provide any equipment except wireless and cabled loudspeakers.

During the competition

 

  • Participants are allowed to wear stage costumes according to the theme.
  • Participants must attend at least 30 minutes before re-registration. If not, the participant is declared void.
  • Participants are not allowed to do any exercise while in the competition room or outside the competition room.
  • LO will guide participants to the stage when the participant’s name is called by the MC.
  • The duration of the performance starts from the moment the MC invites participants to appear.
  • The jury has the right to give an assessment in accordance with the evaluation criteria set by the committee.
  • The final result of the jurys assessment is affirmed.

ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION

Before the competition

 

  • Participants are active students of domestic and foreign universities.
  • Each tertiary institution can only send a maximum of 3 participants.
  • Participants must complete administration (registration & payment) no later than one week before the technical meeting (29 November, 2019)
  • Participants are not permitted to use communication tools while in the competition room. All communication tools are collected at the committee and will be returned after the race is finished.
  • Participants are allowed to use both digital and printed dictionaries.

 

During the competition

 

  • Participants are required to wear neat and polite clothes.
  • Participants must attend at least 30 minutes before re-registration is closed to re-register. If not, the participant is declared void.
  • The committee does not provide any equipment except the room as a medium for organizing the competition.
  • Each participant prepares stationery to work on their essay.
  • Participants are not allowed to make any communication while in the competition room while the competition is in progress, except for emergency needs (sick, etc.) and approved by the competition committee.
  • The committee gives time to go to the toilet before the race starts. Participants are not allowed to leave the competition room during the writing contest.
  • Global Topics can be accessed on the Widyatama International Academic Competition (WI-CAN) website
  • Essays are written in good and correct English, and do not contain Ethnicity, Religion, Race, and Inter-group relation and / or pornographic elements.
  • Participants are given 90 minutes to complete the essay. Excess time results in an automatic value reduction by a panel of judges.
  • The final result of the jurys assessment is affirmed.
